The committee charged with helping Republicans to take the House from Democrats reported a massive fundraising haul.

The National Republican Congressional Committee has announced that it brought in $45.4 million in donations in the second quarter of 2021, the most that organization has ever raised in a non-election year.

Republicans hope to use that money to flood the airwaves with advertising promoting its candidates in the 2022 midterm elections.

Should they retake the House, Republicans have said they will work to undermine the agenda of President Joe Biden. Opinion polls have shown consistent support for Biden’s agenda, with the economy beginning to recover after a historic deployment of vaccines.

Historically, presidents have fared poorly in midterm elections, with voters supporting the opposition party at the polls. Democrats took control of the House after Donald Trump’s chaotic first two years in office, while Republicans took control of the body back in 2010 after President Barack Obama’s reforms dealt with the Great Recession.
