Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) defended Donald Trump’s decision in 2020 to plot a coup against the United States that would have overturned the results of the election and keep him in office.

Grassley made the strange point in a speech on the floor of the Senate.

The Trump ally argued that Democrats investigating the January attack on the Capitol in concert with Trump’s efforts to get the Department of Justice to keep him on office are going to far.

“This country has had to deal with Democrats’ obsession with destroying Trump for much too long. In the process, I fear my colleagues on the other side of the aisle have done and will do lasting damage to our political system,” said Grassley.

He followed up the statement with a defense of Trump’s coup plot.

“The president has every right to discuss ideas & strategies with his closest advisors … for robust discussion.”

If Trump had succeeded, millions of perfectly legitimate votes would have been thrown out and President Joe Biden would have been denied the White House even though he won the popular vote and the electoral college.

Trump’s plot did not succeed but now evidence has been emerging, including a letter drafted by his lawyers to the Department of Defense, detailing the extent of his illegal plan.

Grassley’s speech further connects the party at large to Trump’s undemocratic actions and shows that there is little to no separation between Trump and the party writ large.
