Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis joined other Republican leaders around the country in pushing the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade, which would have the effect of making abortion rights illegal for millions of American women.
“According to a court brief filed Thursday, the governor is one of 11 joining Mississippi Gov. Henry McMaster in arguing that the landmark 1973 ruling should be overturned and let states decide how to regulate abortion,” ClickOrlando reported.
In multiple Republican-led states the repeal of Roe would immediately make abortion against the law, making doctors and in some instances pregnant women in violation of state law for merely seeking a medical procedure.
DeSantis’ decision to lock arms with the anti-choice right is likely part of his political calculations for his reelection campaign in 2022 and a possible presidential run in 2024.
The move against abortion rights puts DeSantis in the minority. Polling has repeatedly shown that a strong majority of Americans support the right to an abortion.
The winner of the most votes in every election since 2008 has been a supporter of abortion rights. The two candidates with the most votes in American history – Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden – have supported abortion rights and the preservation of Roe vs. Wade.
