President Joe Biden has scored a political win after the Senate voted to start work on a bipartisan infrastructure package. The deal, which would see billions spent on fixing crumbling American roads, bridges, and other superstructures, was something Donald Trump was unable to get over the course of his one-term presidency.

“This deal signals to the world that our democracy can function,” Biden said in a statement released after the Senate vote. “We will once again transform America and propel us into the future.”

“In all, 17 Republican senators joined the Democrats on Wednesday in voting to launch the debate, but most remained skeptical. The GOP senators were given a thick binder of briefing materials during a private lunch, but they asked many questions and wanted more details,” Time Magazine reported.

Polling has shown widespread bipartisan support for infrastructure spending, especially for provisions that have been offered by the Democratic majority in the House and Senate.

Democrats have said that if Republicans hold up the much-needed bill, they will move ahead with passing the bill via the Senate’s reconciliation process which would not require votes from Republicans for passage.
