Over 35 million American families have now received payments from the government to help take care of their children.

The child tax credit, which came about from the American Rescue Plan, has been described by some as “Biden Bucks.”

The payments amount to about $15 billion in direct benefits for families from coast to coast. Every Republican in both the House and Senate voted against the plan.

“For the first time in our nation’s history, American working families are receiving monthly tax relief payments to help pay for essentials like doctor’s visits, school supplies, and groceries,” Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in a statement.

The anti-poverty program is the largest such effort by the government since President Lyndon Johnson’s war on poverty measures in 1964.

“[The child tax credit] is a huge relief for way too many working parents and particularly during this pandemic,” Arohi Pathak, director of policy at the Poverty to Prosperity program at the Center for American Progress told CNBC.
