Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is promising that he will “go to war” on behalf of Chick-Fil-A restaurants.

The strange outburst from the conservative senator came after it was reported that Notre Dame students are opposed to a branch of the restaurant being opened on their campus. Students are speaking out about Chick-Fil-A’s past of financing discriminatory right-wing policies. In an open letter, students point out that Chick-Fil-A owner Dan Cathy’s National Christian Charitable Foundation backs hate groups.

The students speaking out against hate has apparently enraged Graham.

“It’s disappointing to hear some ND students and faculty want to ban Chick-fil-A from doing business on campus because they disagree with the values held by the Chick-fil-A founders. What a dangerous precedent to set,” he wrote, adding, “I want everyone in South Carolina and across America to know I have Chick fil-A’s back.”

He concluded: “I hope we don’t have to, but I will go to war for the principles Chick fil-A stands for.”

The violent statement immediately prompted criticism of Graham online, with many pointing out that he was speaking out in defense of a chicken restaurant worth millions of dollars.
