Trump Calls Capitol Attackers ‘Great People’

Trump is once again praising the Capitol attackers.

Donald Trump

Donald Trump, the most prominent Republican in America, has described the people who attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6 as “great people.”

Trump made the bizarre terror endorsement during an interview on the right-wing Fox Business.

Trump’s rhetoric echoes his praise of neo-Nazi marchers in 2017 as “very fine people.”

“These were peaceful people, these were great people,” Trump said of the people who attended his “Stop the Steal” rally, who eventually went on to attack the Capitol.

Many of the Trump supporters who breached the building’s defenses and attacked Capitol Police went to the building with the intention of overturning Trump’s loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. They also sought to hurt Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, who refused Trump’s demands to stop Biden’s votes from being counted.

Over 500 supporters of Trump have been arrested for their role in the attack and multiple agencies are investigating their crimes. Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently started a select committee in the House to investigate the attack, a move which was almost unanimously opposed by Republicans.

Observers have said that Republicans hope to promote election conspiracies to whip up support in their base for votes in the 2022 midterms, as they hope to turn over control of Congress to the Republican Party.
