Televangelist Jim Bakker, who was jailed for defrauding donors with his wife Tammy Faye Bakker, received virus relief funds.
“When the U.S. government extended pandemic hardship loans to thousands of religious institutions, Jim Bakker and Morningside USA, his ministry in Blue Eye, Missouri, were among the most high-profile recipients,” ABC News reported.
Bakker got between $650,000 and $1 million from the PPP program, which was designed to shore up American business during the pandemic.
Bakker is currently the subject of a complaint by the New York and Missouri attorneys general, along with the Federal Drug Administration and Federal Trade Commission after he claimed a silver product he sold could prevent or cure COVID-19. The claim is completely false.
Previously Bakker served 5 years in federal prison after personally profiting from bringing in funds for Heritage USA, which was supposed to be a religious real estate development.
