Steve Bannon, Donald Trump’s former campaign manager and senior White House advisor, has been arrested for fraud.
Bannon is accused of working with others to defraud donors to a so-called charity “We Build the Wall.” The project, purportedly to build a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico, had the public support of Donald Trump’s sons.
According to the indictment filed by the Justice Department, Bannon worked with his co-defendant Brian Kolfage to bring in money for the project. Instead, the documents allege, the men used the money for their own personal benefit.
The indictment says the operation brought in at least $25 million.
“While repeatedly assuring donors that Brian Kolfage, the founder and public face of We Build the Wall, would not be paid a cent, the defendants secretly schemed to pass hundreds of thousands of dollars to Kolfage, which he used to fund his lavish lifestyle,” Acting U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said in a statement.
Despite the direct connection to Trump and his ideas, the White House attempted to distance itself from the arrest in a statement.
Bannon is the second of Trump’s 2016 campaign managers to face criminal charges. His other campaign boss, Paul Manafort, is currently in federal prison.
