A Republican threat to ban rappers Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion for their song “WAP” has backfired.

The raunchy single from the duo is now the number one song in America.

“Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion have broken the record for the most streams by a song in its debut week, in a historic sign that women artists are making their mark on hip-hop like never before,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

WAP topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart after being streamed a staggering 93 million times, a record for the first week of a song’s release. The song also sold 125,000 digital copies.

Soon after its release the song came under fire by several conservatives, including a former Republican congressional candidate who said it should be banned. Conservative pundits like Ben Shapiro also complained about the song’s sexual lyrics.

Despite the conservative outcry, the vast majority of music consumers clearly enjoyed the music and sought it out as a diversion during a troubling time in America.
